Why to write about circus?

Long before I founded Scenic Circus, I began writing about circus. It was my way of delving deeper into the world of circus. I have been a circus enthusiast since I was a child and this enthusiasm was for what we now call the classic circus. Back then, for me, it was the only circus that existed - an exotic world with artists from all over the world, with animals and clowns, with a a tent and lots of wagons. This microcosm was always separated from the outside world by a fence, which I looked over with some melancholy.

The more I then dealt with the circus, the more conversations I had with inspiring people in the circus world, the more open this world seemed to me. And that did not mean it lost its magic. On the contrary, I am convinced that only when you take the perspective behind the circus fence (or behind the scenes) do you discover its full charm. Because circus, no matter what form it takes, is more than a show. It is a way of life.

Today, the circus world is more open than ever before. Anyone who is enthusiastic about the circus today does not stand wistfully at a circus fence, but finds ways to do circus themselves. The rapid development of children's and youth circuses has contributed to this. Anyone who writes about circus these days cannot stop at reporting on an exotic world from a fan's perspective. Because so many people interested in the circus have long since found one way or another to the other side of the fence - more or less far.

At the same time, the circus world is more diverse than ever before. "Classical circus", "Cirque Nouveau", "Variety", "New Circus" and so many variations in between that cannot be put into boxes exist. The awareness that all the forms belong together, have the same origins and can complement each other in their differences is only just evolving.

When I founded Scenic Circus and when I wrote about circus, I was always guided by the idea of building bridges between the different forms of circus. This is also the basic idea behind the online journal "Inspiring. Circus. Arts." It is intended as a platform for exploring the circus of our time, its origins and its future from a variety of perspectives.
